Poké-101

A guide to Pokémon for parents

Don't know the difference between a Charmander or a Squirtle? Don't know why your children are taking better care of fictional creatures than their live pets?? Well not to worry, Academy of FUN! are here to help you grasp the fundamentals of the world of Pokémon.

Pokémon or Pocket Monsters if you will, are unusual creatures with amazing abilities. Most are docile creatures having the intelligence of a bright dog. As a Pokémon trainer you begin your journey after choosing one beginner Pokémon. There are different types of Pokémon you can choose from....

Electric-Pikachu

Pikachu is the face of Pokémon and the name translates as "Electric Mouse". He is (unsurprisingly) an Electric Type.

Much like the game Rock Paper Scissors, each Pokemon type has strengths and weaknesses against other types. For example, Pikachu would fare well against a Water Type like Squirtle because water is a great conductor of electricity. However, against a Ground Type like Diglett his electricity would be grounded making Pikachu ineffective.

Water-Squirtle

One of the original Pokémon from the very first game, Squirtle is a Water Type which means he's effective against... You guessed it! Fire Type Pokémon (and as previously stated ineffective against Electric).

Pokémon of the same type use similar actions/moves/attacks.

Fire-Charmander

Charmander is another Pokémon you you can get right at the start of the game. But, we think his final evolved form is more popular... Charizard... a giant dragon! This particular iteration became is very rare and sought after, especially in the Pokémon cards game (which is a bit like top trumps, but we'll come back to versions of Pokémon as a game later) . Charmander would be effective against Ice & Grass Types but not against Water or Rock.

Grass-Bulbasaur

The very first Pokémon in the Pokédex (big list of Pokémon)! The underdog of the original Pokémon. A grass type is great against Rock Types, not so great against Fire Types.

There are many more types listed here.

Rare and Legendary Pokémon

As well as the basic Pokémon above you might be interested in some of the more advanced Pokémon (knowledge of these will impress the kids ;) ) Legendary classified Pokémon are very rare to find and even more difficult to capture. They are the most powerful Pokémon in the game. Articuno (ice), Zapdos (electric) & Moltres (fire) were the first Legenday Pokémon introduced. They are birds that are Electric, Ice & Fire Types. Conveniently, uno, dos tres...spanish numbers.

That's probably enough to digest in one sitting. Next time we'll look at game play including storing your Pokémon, evolution, pokémon gyms and the various means to get your your Pokémon fix.
